Tucked away in an historic 20th Century weatherboard and sandstone cottage in Berrima, Peppergreen Estate is a shining gem in the Southern Highlands food and wine scene’s crown.
The striking building was actually once the home of Peppergreen Antiques, and when current owners Hank and Katrina took over, they honoured the heritage by keeping its name, and even giving the moniker to their line-up of exceptional cold climate wines and extra virgin olive oil, which are also available via their online store.
The cellar door and eatery opened in May 2019 and according to marketing manager Jewel Brown, they haven’t sat still since! “It’s been great – we have had a full house almost every opening hour, with customers enjoying the fact that they can taste our wines and also enjoy a stunning meal, all in the one spot, making full use of our giant roaring open fire!”
“We have nine wines in our collection at the moment,” she adds, “with eight more soon to be added to the array, a mix of red, white and sparkling.”
As for the food, expect only the very best. Renowned Highlands’ chef Mark Chance has curated an exciting French inspired, modern Australian menu, geared towards relaxed dining. Favourites include Spaghetti Aglio e Olio with garlic, chilli, parsley with Peppergreen Estate Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Twice baked gruyère soufflé, rocket, roast tomato and lavosh, and Salt and pepper eggplant with chilli, shallots, pickles and lemon.
Seafood lovers will salivate over the Salt and Pepper Prawns, with cucumber pickles, Sichuan pepper and chilli jam, while meat eaters will delight in the Grilled skirt steak, mash, greens, Madeira and raisins. Breakfast is served from 10am to 12pm, and tasting boards are available until 4.30m daily.
Peppergreen Estate is open Thursday through to Monday and is located at 13 market place Berrima. To book, call 02 4877 1070 or visit https://peppergreenestate.com.au/the-vineyard/
