While many in the wine industry and mainstream media are referring to the Southern Highlands as “the new Hunter Valley”, due to the exciting array of wineries here, there’s also a buzzing craft beer scene cropping up that you just have to check out.

Eden Brewery in Mittagong is making a name not only for its incredible and unique brews (think: Birch Wheat, a Belgian wheat beer with sunflower seeds in the mix, and Blueberry Sour, which is brewed with over 100kg of blueberries and boasts a beautiful pink blush), but also the way it gives back to important causes around the world.

Owners Jacob Newman and wife Deb donate 10 per cent of all profits to Oxfam, as a means of providing clean drinking water to underdeveloped societies. If that isn’t a good enough reason to stop by and sample their eight-beer tasting paddles for $20, or enjoy a taster glass for just $5, I don’t know what is.

The interior is fitted out with long picnic tables, which sit adjacent to the enormous brewing vats and Jacob and Deb encourage punters to bring their own picnic basket, buy a beer and enjoy both at their leisure.

Follow their Facebook page to find out when the Old Mate’s BBQ Food Truck is parked outside. With traditional USA-styled BBQ, it’s the perfect match to the beer. There’s also a chance you’ll catch Steve’s Mobile Woodfire Pizza Oven, or Big Papa’s Food Truck, which lays claim to the ‘best burgers in the world’. On any given weekend, you can find a different food vendor out the front, so be sure to keep watch.

The bar area at Eden Brewery always garners a great crowd of locals and weekenders alike.

Don’t leave without a ‘Growler’ – a one or two litre container that will keep the beer of your choice chilled for 24hours and definitely don’t miss their latest release – the Eden Artemis Graft, a wine-beer hybrid made from Artemis Close Vine Pinot Noir Grape Juice.

Over in Moss Vale, the causal elegance of Southern Highlands Brewing Company Taphouse and Kitchen will draw you in and make you feel as though every visit is a special occasion.

The Taphouse on Argyle Street in Moss Vale is always bustling

Launched in 2015 over a Bowral Blacks rugby game, the brewery itself is a team effort between Head Brewer Cameron James and his good mate, ex-financier Ben Twomey, who, quite obviously, share a passion for beer (like the rest of us!). The two launched Taphouse in 2017 to resounding success with both locals and tourists alike. The recent appointment of two-hatted chef Michael Morrison has resulted in a carefully crafted menu of ‘beer cuisine’, which perfectly accompanies your lager. Just as well, as there are nine locally brewed choices to work your way through, so you’ll want to line your stomach with something truly delicious! I love that this list of lagers includes an “invitational” tap, which is provided on a rotational basis for like-minded breweries to sell their sips.

The ‘beer cuisine’ at the Taphouse does not disappoint

I just adore the spacious interior with its quirky wallpaper, Euro feel and large group tables, which fit up to 14 people (in busy times, you’ll need to book for these). My don’t-miss suggestions include Naked Harvest Australian Blonde, which is a light, easy drinking brew that’s fabulous with their fish and chips (ale-battered, of course) and Celtic Red Ale, a more intense taste with flavours of raisin, roast and nutmeg. Enjoy it with the grass-fed T-bone steak or confit of duck!

Parquetry tiling and quirky wallpaper give the Taphouse a truly unique ambience

I look forward to seeing you there!

Love, Di xx
